Hoop-la-la! After the Basics

Hoop-la-la! After the Basics

Now that you’ve got the hang of the basics, what are some of the other cool things you can do with Hoopla?

My Hoopla

Here, you can see the list of all the titles you have checked out, titles that you’ve Favorited, your Hoopla Borrowing history, and your Hoopla settings.

Favorites

Any titles for which you’ve selected the Heart icon to Favorite them will appear on your Favorites page. To find those titles, tap “Favorites” on the Home page in your app, or select “Favorites” under “My Hoopla” in your browser.

Borrowing History

If you want to turn your Borrowing History off, tap the slider in your app or select the “Hide” button in your settings in your browser.

Kids Mode

Hoopla Kids Mode makes browsing easier for kids! Tap the slider in the app, or select “On” in your browser, to turn on Kids Mode. Once you do, only kid-appropriate content will appear while browsing and in your search results.

By default, Hoopla keeps track of your borrowing history – this can make it easier for you to find titles you’ve checked out again, and make sure you’re in the right spot in series you’re following.

App

Tap the 3 dots in the top-right corner of your screen to bring up Settings.

Browser

Find “My Hoopla” in the top-left corner of your screen.

If you’re looking for a specific author or titles in a specific language, you may want to use Hoopla’s Advanced Search feature, found by selecting it underneath the standard Search bar. Simply fill out the fields you want to search and select the Search button.

eBook Settings

You may find reading black text on a bright white screen strains your eyes – so what is there to do? You can adjust your eBook settings!

If you’re using the Hoopla app while reading an eBook, tap in the center of your screen to bring up your eBook Menu.

If you’re using the desktop browser, click on the Menu button represented by 3 horizontal lines in the top-left corner of your screen to bring up your eBook menu.

Chapters

You can peruse the table of contents to skip ahead to a certain chapter – especially helpful in Nonfiction eBooks.

Bookmarks

At the top-right of your screen is a ribbon outline icon – select it to bookmark a page that you can find easily later by going into your menu. This will darken the bookmark icon to indicate that you’ve saved that page.

Highlights

Similar to Bookmarks, you can select passages and highlight them in various colors. To find passages you’ve highlighted, you can go to your menu to find them.

Reading Settings

Is black text on white too harsh to read at night? Do you need a different font?

Your eBook’s settings allow you to change the look of your eBook.

You can adjust the brightness of your screen, font style (there’s even a font style that is friendlier for people with dyslexia), font size, and color theme, as well as line spacing, margin size, and text alignment.

Audiobook Settings

To adjust your Audiobook player settings, tap the “Menu” button with the 3 horizontal lines to bring up your options. You can set bookmarks to save important parts of the audiobook, just like in eBooks. You can also jump forward or backward by 30-second increments, as well as adjust the volume of the audiobook.

Playback Speed

You can increase or decrease how fast the reader speaks. Are you having a hard time understanding the reader? Slow it down! Do longer pauses bother you when you’re listening to an audiobook? Speed it up!

Sleep Timer

Do you like to listen to audiobooks as you fall asleep, but hate the idea that the entire audiobook could play through as you sleep? Set a sleep timer! You control when the audiobook pauses its play through with the Sleep Timer.

Comics Settings

Hoopla’s comics boast a unique feature – the ability to view one panel at a time. This is especially helpful if you’re using Hoopla on a phone or a tablet that has a smaller screen – reading one panel at a time will help you read the comic without squinting!

Music Settings

When you borrow a music album from Hoopla (you can find comedy albums under “Music” as well!), you can play the album straight through, repeat the entire album or any track you like, as well as shuffle through the album to play it in random order.

Movies & TV Settings

When you borrow a movie or an episode of a TV show from Hoopla, you can watch it on your device and add subtitles to make your viewing experience easier. This can be especially helpful if you’re watching a title somewhere where you don’t have headphones or need to keep the volume down.

I have cards with other library systems, too!

Other local library systems, like Hamilton County and Brown County, also provide access to Hoopla for their patrons.

If you have a Cincinnati Library card or Brown County Library card, you can use a separate email address and library card number for each library system – this can increase what you can check out from Hoopla per month by double, triple, or even more!

If you need to create a new email address for this purpose, the easiest free email services you can use to create a new email address are Gmail, Yahoo, and AOL.
