Most checked out fiction books of 2020
A look at the Clermont County Public Library’s list of most checked out fiction books in 2020.
A lot of us changed our reading habits in 2020. Due to the lockdown we had more time to read. Or due to working from home, we missed out on commute time to listen to audiobooks. I know I read many more upbeat books with guaranteed happy endings than the domestic thrillers that I usually prefer.
But there was a constant in 2020! Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens remained the most checked out book in our library system. For a book that was published in 2018, it has amazing staying power with never-ending great word of mouth. So, onto the list of most checked out fiction books.
Most checked out fiction books in 2020
Where the Crawdads Sing
This is New York Times nature writer Delia Owens’ debut novel. By the way, she was over 65 when it was published, so hold onto those dreams of accomplishing amazing things, no matter your age! This novel juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a heartbreaking coming of age story along with a surprising murder investigation.
Little Fires Everywhere
This 2017 novel definitely got a bump from the publicity of its television adaptation into a miniseries. So it’s not surprising that Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng is in the number two spot. So this domestic drama, set in Shaker Heights, tells the story of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the mother and daughter who upend their lives.
The Giver of Stars
The third most checked out fiction book is The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. She’s always a popular author, so I wasn’t surprised to see her latest book on this list. Set during the Depression, five women answer Eleanor Roosevelt’s call for women to deliver books. They become Horseback Librarians of Kentucky. And they’re determined to overcome danger to bring books to people who’ve never had any.
The Silent Patient
This 2019 psychological thriller, The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, continues its popularity. Alicia, a famous artist, shoots her husband in the face five times and then never speaks again. Criminal psychotherapist Theo Faber is captivated by Alicia’s story. So he jumps at the opportunity to work with her. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery takes him down a path more terrifying than he ever imagined.
Summer of ’69
Elin Hilderbrand’s domestic fiction books are always popular so it’s no surprise that Summer of ’69 made the list. This story deals with the changes facing the US in 1969 by sharing the intertwined stories of four siblings.
The library’s most checked-out fiction of 2020 list doesn’t hold any surprises but I think we all appreciate the comfort of the known. And some amazing writing.
