Have fun and bond together when your entire family joins the Library’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Participating in the challenge can also help kids maintain their reading skills during the months when they’re not in school.

Make summer reading fun for the whole family with these ideas:

  • Set a goal together. Decide how many books you want to read as a family. This could be a certain number of minutes read per person. Or you can set a goal of total minutes logged by the whole family. Challenge each other to see who can have the longest reading streak.
  • Choose items to read that everyone will enjoy. Take time to browse the library together and find books, magazines, and even graphic novels that might appeal to everyone. Choosing audiobooks for family travels is a fun way to share favorite authors and stories. Or discover new ones together.
  • Make a reading schedule. Decide when you’re going to read together as a family. This could be at bedtime, after dinner, or on weekends. Little ones seeing parents read for pleasure is a great way to turn them into readers too.
  • Find a comfortable place to read. Make sure you have a comfortable place to read together, such as a couch, bed, poolside, or even the floor. Or maybe a blanket fort.
  • Have fun with it! Reading should be enjoyable, so make sure you’re having fun together. Turn it into a special activity with snacks or reading games. You could all even dress up as your favorite characters.

Summer reading is a great way to spend time together as a family and make memories that will last a lifetime. So, sign up and start reading!
