Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman. The beloved 1998 movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman is always on my Halloween watchlist. The book it is based on is just as magical:

“Orphaned at an early age, Gillian and Sally Owen are raised by an aunt who deals in sorcery. The girls long for the normal life and leave home as soon as they can. Years later, tragedy strikes and it is then they realize that magic is their gift, not their affliction.”

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

I associate autumn with all things spooky. In this “excited for fall” book by Shirley Jackson (author of The Haunting of Hill House) provides a perfect dose of haunting prose without going as far as a horror novel. The atmosphere of mystery, as well as Merricat’s connection to nature, will make you imagine chilly breezes and falling leaves:

“A deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family and the dramatic struggle that ensues when an unexpected visitor interrupts their unusual way of life.”

The Bakeshop of Pumpkin and Spice

The Bakeshop at Pumpkin and Spice by Donna Kauffman, Kate Angell, & Allyson Charles. If cozy romances are more your thing, this is the book for you! Reading the three interconnected stories within this book feels like being wrapped in a blanket with your favorite pumpkin spice beverage and one of the treats from Bellaluna’s Bakeshop:

“Every autumn, Moonbright, Maine, is the picture of charm with its piles of crisp leaves, flickering jack-o’-lanterns…and a touch of the sweetest kind of enchantment. Witches, goblins, the occasional ghost—they’re all sure to be spotted at the annual Halloween parade, where adults and children alike dress in costume to celebrate Moonbright’s favorite holiday. And no place has more seasonal spirit than Bellaluna’s Bakeshop, a family business steeped in traditional recipes, welcoming warmth—and, legend has it, truly spellbinding, heart-melting treats. Between good-natured Halloween tricks, frothy pumpkin lattes, and some very special baked goods, for three Moonbright residents looking for love—whether they know it or not—the spookiest thing will be how magical romance can suddenly be.”

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell. Don’t forget about graphic novels! This whimsical graphic novel is bursting with fall activities, colors, and food! The story is funny and sentimental, making this a reading experience you won’t soon forget:

“Working at a pumpkin patch every autumn, two seasonal best friends organize ultimate Halloween plans to celebrate their last working year together.”
