Beginning January 1, 2023, we’ll accept short stories for our annual Short Story Contest. Polish up a story you already have, finish one you’re currently working on, or start writing now. The final day to submit your short story is January 31, 2023.

Need help either polishing up or starting your story? The Library can help! We offer many resources to help you write your very best short story.
Even if you’re not submitting a story, we offer resources that you can take advantage of as a writer.
Technology for writing
Need a computer to work on your manuscript? We offer computers with Internet access and MS Word at all 10 of our locations.
Our Miami Township and Owensville Branches offer study rooms with spots for laptops if you need quiet space.
If you prefer to write on the go, we have Pocket Wi-Fi devices for checkout.
Writers group
Join The Writers Group which meets monthly at our Batavia Branch. Share your writing endeavors and hone your craft. It’s an opportunity to generate ideas and network with fellow writers. New attendees are always welcome.
Articles about writing
Explore our digital resource, The Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center. It offers access to thousands of magazine articles and book excerpts about writing.
The Writer magazine is available digitally using the hoopla Digital app’s Magazine BingePass. Using the app and your library card, you can check it out for 7 days to read current and recent issues.
Videos and books about writing
Use the hoopla Digital app’s Great Courses BingePass to check out Writing Great Fiction with James Hynes. This television series offers a wealth of writing exercises. From evoking a scene to charting a plot, get a master class in storytelling. You’ll have access to all 24 episodes for seven days.
Use the Libby app to access almost 150 eBooks on a variety of topics focused on writing. Check out and explore books by authors such as Haruki Murakami, Ray Bradbury, and Anna Quindlen.
